Notes

We photographed 50 Google AI Overviews about Notion. Here's who got cited.

On September 7, 2026, we captured Google's answers to 50 questions a buyer might ask about Notion and its competitors in the United States. Notion was named in most of them. Its own website was a source in seven.

Last reviewed September 18, 2026.

Notion did not commission this and has no relationship with Nordcite. We chose it because almost everyone in marketing knows the product, which makes the patterns easy to see. Every number below comes from 50 numbered, timestamped screenshots.

The short answer

Google showed an AI Overview for all 50 queries.

Notion was named in 42 answers, but a Notion page was cited as a source in only 7. In 30 of the 50 answers, none of the four brands we tracked (Notion, ClickUp, monday.com, Asana) had a page of its own among the sources.

Notion's own site was cited when the question was about Notion's policies: refunds, pricing, support, uptime. It was never cited for "best tools" or "alternatives" questions.

YouTube was cited in 36 of the 50 answers and Reddit in 17. Behind them sat a long tail: 110 different domains, 83 of them cited only once.

The answer to "Notion vs ClickUp pricing" opened with ClickUp's price advantage and cited ClickUp's help center. No Notion page was among its sources.

What we captured

We wrote 50 queries in US English, in four groups:

Query groupQueriesExamples
Best-of15"best all in one workspace for startups", "top task management platforms for 2026"
Comparison15"Notion vs ClickUp", "Monday.com vs Asana"
Alternatives10"Notion alternatives", "Asana alternatives cheaper"
Trust10"is Notion legit", "Notion refund policy"

Each query was captured once on google.com, from the United States, signed out, between 09:47 and 10:07 UTC on September 7, 2026 (early morning in New York). For every capture we kept the screenshot with its timestamp, the brands named in the answer, and every cited source in the order Google listed it. We tracked Notion and three competitors: ClickUp, monday.com and Asana.

Two terms carry this whole piece:

  • Named: the brand appears in the text of the answer.
  • Cited: a page from the brand's own website is one of the answer's linked sources.

Every query showed an AI Overview

All 50 queries returned an AI Overview. That matches the wider data for this kind of query. In Seer Interactive's 2026 analysis of 5.47 million queries across 53 brands, informational "X vs Y" comparison queries showed an AI Overview 95.4% of the time and review queries 86.3% (February 2026 data).

If your buyers compare products on Google, they read an AI answer before they see a link. So the question is what that answer says, and whose pages it is built from.

Notion was named in 42 answers and cited in 7

In 35 of the 42 answers that named Notion, Google described the product using other people's pages: videos, Reddit threads, comparison articles and other companies' blogs.

The competitors followed the same pattern. ClickUp was named in 26 answers, monday.com in 23 and Asana in 20. Their own pages were cited far less often: ClickUp's in 7 answers, monday.com's in 6, Asana's in 4. In 30 of the 50 answers, not one of the four brands had a page of its own among the sources.

Notion's own site answered questions about Notion's policies

Seven answers cited a Notion page. Five were trust questions about Notion itself:

  • "can you get your money back from Notion" (exhibit 41): three sources, all notion.com.
  • "Notion refund policy" (exhibit 46): four sources, all notion.com.
  • "Notion pricing plans 2026" (exhibit 45): notion.com first, then six other sites.
  • "Notion customer support reviews" (exhibit 44): reddit.com, trustpilot.com, then notion.com.
  • "Notion reliability and uptime" (exhibit 47): notion.com was one of 12 source links, alongside status-checking sites, Reddit and YouTube.

The other two were comparisons. For "Notion vs Confluence" (exhibit 27) a notion.com page was listed second, after Atlassian. For "Notion vs ClickUp" (exhibit 26) a notion.so page was listed fourth, after zenpilot.com and two ClickUp pages.

The refund answer shows what a clear official page gets you. It opened: "Notion offers refunds within 3 days for monthly billing and 30 days for annual billing from the invoice date." Every source behind it was Notion's help center.

Now the other side. In the 25 best-of and alternatives answers, the questions a buyer asks while choosing a tool, no Notion page was cited at all. Notion was named in 21 of those 25 answers anyway. What Google said about Notion there came entirely from third parties.

For "is Notion safe and secure", Reddit answered

The security question went the other way. The answer to "is Notion safe and secure" (exhibit 43) cited reddit.com, youtube.com and reddit.com again, and opened:

"Notion is secure enough for general business and personal productivity, but it is not end-to-end encrypted, meaning Notion holds the keys and can technically read your data."

None of Notion's own pages was among the sources. Two other trust answers looked similar. "is Notion legit" (exhibit 42) cited YouTube, Reddit, eesel.ai, Trustpilot and uxplanet.org. "Notion reviews" (exhibit 48) cited G2, eesel.ai and YouTube twice.

A trust question is where a brand most wants to speak for itself. On this morning, for security, reviews and legitimacy, the answer came from forums, videos and review sites.

Competitors' pages answered the comparison questions

ClickUp-owned pages (clickup.com and help.clickup.com) were cited in 7 answers: two best-of lists (exhibits 09 and 14), four comparisons (18, 19, 20, 26) and "Notion vs ClickUp pricing" (50). monday.com's site was cited in 6 answers, including "ClickUp vs Asana" (exhibit 17), a comparison between two other brands in which monday.com was also named.

Exhibit 50 is the clearest case. Asked "Notion vs ClickUp pricing", the AI Overview opened:

"ClickUp is consistently 30% to 40% cheaper than Notion at equivalent paid tiers, though their core strengths split between project operations and documentation."

Its three sources were rock.so, zenpilot.com and ClickUp's help center. No Notion page was cited.

rock.so, the site of Rock, a smaller team-chat and project-management app, was cited in 10 answers. All 10 were about Notion: comparisons (exhibits 16, 18, 20, 25, 26), alternatives (38, 39, 40) and cost questions (49, 50). It was the first-listed source in four of them.

On this morning, the pages that framed Notion's comparisons were written by ClickUp, by a smaller rival and by third parties. None of them was written by Notion.

YouTube was cited in 36 of 50 answers, Reddit in 17

YouTube appeared more than once in 16 answers, 60 YouTube source cards in total. It was the first-listed source in 7 answers; Reddit was first in 4.

That direction matches national data measured another way. In Ahrefs' September 2026 analysis of more than 3 million US queries, YouTube accounted for 22.9% and Reddit for 18.5% of the citations going to the 50 most-cited domains in AI Overviews. Ahrefs measures a share of citations; we count answers. Both put YouTube first and Reddit second.

The sites you might expect to dominate a software category were thin in this sample. g2.com was cited in 3 answers, trustpilot.com in 2 and techrepublic.com in 2.

The long tail: 110 domains, 83 cited once

Across the 50 answers, Google cited 110 different domains. 27 appeared in more than one answer and 83 appeared exactly once. Each answer cited 4.6 different domains on average, from 1 to 10.

After YouTube and Reddit, the repeat sources were specific rather than famous. zapier.com was cited in 11 answers and rock.so in 10. taskrhino.ca, zenpilot.com and help.clickup.com had 5 each; atlassian.com and plaky.com had 4. The sites cited once included coursera.org, gartner.com and a PCMag page, next to many much smaller sites.

This is the practical point. The set of pages that shapes the answers in a category can be listed. You can read it, check which of those pages mention you, and decide what to do about each one.

Where Notion was missing

Notion wasn't named in 8 of the 50 answers:

  • Four were head-to-head comparisons between two competitors: "ClickUp vs Asana" (17), "ClickUp vs Monday.com" (19), "Monday.com vs Asana" (21) and "Monday.com vs ClickUp features" (22). You wouldn't expect Notion there.
  • Two named competitors but not Notion: "top productivity tools for small business" (12) named monday.com and Asana, and "Asana alternatives cheaper" (32) named ClickUp and monday.com.
  • Two named none of the four brands: "best tools for automating business processes" (08) and "top ai productivity tools for work" (11). Those answers went to automation platforms and AI assistants.

So the real gaps were two answers, 12 and 32. The other six were comparisons Notion wasn't part of, or categories where none of the four brands appeared.

What this means if you're not Notion

  1. Count named and cited separately. A brand that is named but never cited is being described by other people's pages. That split is the first thing to put in a client report (how to report AI visibility).
  2. Make the pages about you the obvious source. Pricing, refunds, security, status, support. In this sample Google quoted Notion's refund page almost word for word, and took its answer on security from Reddit.
  3. Publish honest comparison pages. ClickUp's help center was a source in 5 answers, including the pricing comparison with Notion. Honest means factual and current, not a "top 10" list that puts yourself first. In early 2026, SEO consultant Lily Ray documented visibility drops at software companies that had published dozens, in some cases hundreds, of such self-ranking lists; our earned-media playbook covers the honest alternatives.
  4. Get into the sources Google already cites for your category. For this category that meant YouTube reviews and tutorials, the Reddit threads where buyers ask questions, and a long tail of comparison sites. Do it in the open (how to get cited in AI Overviews).
  5. Build your own inventory for your country. These are one brand's answers in the United States. Your category, and your buyers' country, will have their own list.

Limits of this sample

  • One capture per query, on one morning, in one country, signed out. AI Overviews change often. In Ahrefs' analysis of more than 43,000 keywords (published November 2025), an AI Overview had a 70% chance of changing between one observation and the next. Read every number here as what Google showed on September 7, 2026.
  • Fifty queries is a sample. The counts are exact for these 50 queries. If you read "36 of 50" as a rate for the whole category, the plausible range is wide: by our arithmetic, roughly 58% to 83% for YouTube.
  • We chose the queries. A different query set would give different numbers. We measured what the answer showed, not what happened after anyone clicked.

FAQ

Which websites does Google's AI Overview cite most? It depends on the query set. In our 50 Notion answers, YouTube (36) and Reddit (17) led. Across more than 3 million US queries, Ahrefs' September 2026 data also put YouTube and Reddit first and second among AI Overview citations.

Why does Google cite third-party sites instead of my site? In this sample, Notion's own pages were cited for questions about Notion's policies and almost never for category or comparison questions. For those, Google drew on videos, forums, comparison articles and other companies' pages.

How many sources does an AI Overview cite? Here, 4.6 different domains per answer on average, from 1 to 10. Other studies count differently (some include repeat links and links to Google itself), so compare figures only when the method matches.

Does being named in an AI Overview mean you are cited? No. Notion was named in 42 answers and a Notion page was cited in 7. Measure the two separately.
